The Aegis system destroyer, a large aircraft carrier with a wide array of electronic sensors, has been the subject of an annual competition to design a combat aircraft carrier for the U.S. Navy.

The competition is sponsored by Lockheed Martin, the defense contractor that built the carrier.

The winner of the Aegidrome program will receive $1.6 billion in contracts, including $750 million for a new carrier-based aircraft carrier.

But the ship is the subject to some criticism.

A number of critics said the Aegissat project is an expensive, unnecessary and costly duplication of effort.
